Morrisons has continued its push into the convenience sector with the acquisition of six HMV stores.

Following the recent purchase of 49 Blockbusters sites as well as seven former Jessops stores as part of its plan to expand the Morrisons M Local offering, it has acquired six sites from the entertainment retail chain’s administrator Deloitte. Three of the sites are located in the South East and London, areas that Morrisons is keen to expand into.

The six HMV stores acquired by Morrisons are located in:

  • Scarborough
  • Newbury
  • London Wood Green
  • Lancaster
  • Enfield
  • Chesterfield

The supermarket has set itself the target of opening 70 convenience stores in the UK by the end of 2013 and it plans to have all newly-acquired stores open by the end of the summer.

Gordon Mowat, managing director of Morrisons Convenience, said the push for sites will continue. “We have either opened or acquired 70 stores just one month into our financial year so we are pleased that we will exceed our 2013 target,” he said. “Our focus is now on opening these stores as soon as we can as well as pushing on to secure even more sites. This is a big expansion year for us and we have got off to a great start.”
