According to new research from CCTV operators Get Licensed, 85% of stores are reporting meat to be the most stolen item shoplifters target when they strike.

In 2024, England and Wales recorded over 516,000 shoplifting offences, the company says, up 20% on the previous year and the highest figure since 2003.

Now, the firm has analysed the recent data on shop thefts to produce a report and guide on shop crime, and during this research it also uncovered the top five items being stolen, with some perhaps less expected produce also making the list.

Top five items stolen in UK retail

1. Meat (85% of stores reported)

2. Alcohol (78%)

3. Confectionery (72%)

4. Baby Formula (68%)

5. Cheese (65%)

Shahzad Ali (left), Get Licensed CEO, said: “Shoplifting has become one of the biggest challenges facing retailers in the UK, but there are practical steps stores can take right now to deter thieves.

Ali added that there are some initial steps retailers can take to help minimise the effects of shoplifting. “With proactive strategies and staff empowerment, retailers can protect their stores, reduce losses and create a safer environment for employees and customers alike.

“Greeting customers at the door or acknowledging them as they move around the store can make a difference, as it makes potential shoplifters feel seen. Small changes such as opening up shopfloor layouts to improve visibility and training staff to recognise suspicious behaviour can also have a real impact.

“When combined with CCTV and basic security training, these measures can help retailers reduce losses and give staff greater confidence on the shopfloor.”
