Since 1 June, single-use vapes have been banned. Manufacturers have responded with greener alternatives, but selling reusable and refillable devices still carries environmental responsibility. These products contain batteries, electronics, toxic substances, and recyclable materials. Yet millions end up in the bin.
Under WEEE Regulations, all retailers in the UK selling vapes have a legal obligation to provide a collection facility for consumers to return used vapes when they purchase a new one. It’s great to see that recycling bins and take-back schemes are already in place in the vast majority of convenience stores. The challenge for retailers though, is that many customers don’t know they exist.
Ultimately, compliance is only part of the story. With vapes under growing environmental scrutiny, this is a chance for retailers to lead, not just follow. Providing a recycling bin is essential, but the real difference comes when stores actively promote it. Clear signage, staff prompts, and visible in-store messaging can turn a legal obligation into a positive statement about values. It shows your store cares about doing the right thing.
At ERP UK, we work with independent retailers to make take-back simple, supplying ready-to-use collection containers and managing the process through our online service. What we’ve seen time and again is that when smaller businesses are given the right information and tools, they are more than capable of meeting compliance obligations – and often go further.
Retailers are on the frontline of public education. Prominently displaying a vape recycling bin, supported by clear, informative posters, can make a real difference. When staff explain why the bin is there, customer habits begin to shift. That’s how we build a circular system—one vape, one customer, one store at a time.
The key messages to share are simple: vapes can be recycled; stores offer take-back schemes; and vapers themselves have an important role to play.
