Has anybody ever come across a property company called Portenstar? Kirin Patel, whose Londis trades at Chessington, Surrey, says rumours are rife that Portenstar is after change-of-use planning permission for a just-under 3,000sq ft disused warehouse on behalf of Tesco Express.
The council had written to advise Kirin and others in the vicinity that Portenstar had made such an application. When he first rang the council it said the plans would be rejected as the original documents didn’t allow for change of use, but now it looks as though it has changed its mind, with the planners saying they can approve it after all.
The council says it cannot comment before the committee hearing on May 25.
I’ve had a look through my planning files and have spoken to C-Store head office, which trawled through the database and Portenstar hasn’t shown up anywhere, so I told Kirin I would run a piece in this issue to see if anyone else knows whether they have acted on behalf of Tesco in other locations. Googling pitches up that Portenstar is part of Rugby Estates.
The new unit, whatever it turns out to be, will be only 200-300 metres away from Kirin. There is already one Tesco Express, along with a One Stop, just a five-minute walk away.
