Seven months ago I reported on Rasiah Thayakaran’s run-ins with Cadent Gas over roadworks outside his store, Rowley News at Rowley Regis in the West Midlands and also outside a coffee shop around the corner where he had planning permission to convert into housing. The roadworks had already hindered his business for six months and held up the conversion. Rasiah reckoned his profit was down by £24K.

He had a whole list of wrongdoings including preventing anyone from parking in his car park, workers redigging the same bits of road and disconnecting gas supplies many times without notice.

By the end of April the work finally finished and Rasiah submitted compensation applications for both businesses.

At the time Cadent said it had been carrying out essential gas mains replacement work – work that would last “until the 22nd century”.

I hate to say it but it’s looking like Rasiah might have to wait just as long to get any compensation out of Cadent Gas.

When I got back in touch with the PR person in October she said she would chase it up immediately. Several emails later she said a decision on compensation was imminent and asked if I would like wait for the outcome before reporting. I agreed.

But days turned into weeks and it became obvious that no response was forthcoming.

I suggested to Rasiah that he should try Ofgem and if that doesn’t get him anywhere it would be worth a shot at small claims court.
