Today, 6 February, is annual Time To Talk Day, a partnership between the Coop and mental health charity, Mind.

The event exists to get people talking about mental health, out in the open without fear or being judged. It also considered the isues it can have on communities, individuals and more. It’s hoped that, by engaging with friends, families, communities and workplaces, we can truly listen and even change lives.

Last year’s event revealed nearly two thirds of the UK public put on a brave face to avoid talking about their mental health, and nearly half of us are less likely to open up as we don’t want to worry others in already difficult times.

Talking openly and honestly can be the first step towards better mental health. It can also help to reduce any stigma and help people feel comfortable enough to seek help when they need it.

There are lots of ways to get involved, from sharing on social media using the #TimeToTalk hashtag, and having conversations with your friends and family, to organising activity and events in your community or store. Some suggestions to help you plan how you’ll support Time to Talk Day include quizzes, lunch sessions and walks where talking is encouraged.

Time to Talk Day was launched in 2014 by Time to Change, a campaign to end mental health stigma and discrimination, which was run by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness.

Resource packs from the charity are free and available to download. They include posters and plans for activities, as well as information on how to approach social media with your plans.

The NHS also has a link to information, available here. You can also read how retailers TYS celebrated the event last year, here.
