A Spar retailer has found an efficient, reliable, and customer-friendly way to manage age-restricted sales thanks to the installation of MyCheckr.

Julian Taylor-Green said ensuring compliance with age-restricted product sales presented significant challenges for his team. With a broad range of age-regulated products, staff faced daily stress managing these transactions.

The core issue stemmed from relying on personal judgement for age estimation. These interactions could be uncomfortable, sometimes leading to disputes that added pressure on employees.

Beyond customer interactions, maintaining regulatory compliance was a critical priority, said Julian. Local authorities and third-party auditors needed assurance that the store was taking responsible and proactive measures when it came to age estimation.

To address these challenges, he introduced MyCheckr in early 2024 to simplify and enhance the business’ age-estimation process.

The all-in-one device employs biometric technology to estimate if a customer is under or over 25 years old. It displays a green screen when a customer is over 25 and does not need to present ID, while it shows a red screen when a customer is under 25 and ID is required.

Julian said the technology has significantly improved the age-estimation process at his store in Weston Downs, Stafford.

Results have included a reduction in staff stress, more positive customer interactions and compliance standards being consistently met.

“MyCheckr applies the same standards to everyone, removing the need for personal judgement. Customers and staff appreciate the unbiased, consistent nature of the technology,” said Julian.

He said the installation was straightforward. “If we want to update or change default settings it’s a quick update on the device using our store PC”.

“One of the massive advantages of MyCheckr is that it goes a really long way to showing compliance to local authorities. Once you pay the one-off fee, it’s plugged in, and away you go. It’s a great safety net for the staff as well as the business,” added Julian.
