A Co-op store in Coventry has turned sky blue in celebration of the city’s football team being crowned champions of the Championship and their ascension to the Premier League.
The exterior of the Heart of England Co-op’s branch in Rotherham Road has been wrapped in the newly promoted side’s colours, and features the club crest, the Premier League logo and the message ‘Champions - Play up Sky Blues!’
Inside the store customers will also find Coventry City branded cake, doughnuts bearing the club badge from Planet Doughnut and cans of Dhillon’s Sky Blue Army beer brewed in the city.
The footall team capped off an extraordinary season last night (21 April) beating Portsmouth 5-1 at home to clinch the title, having already secured promotion to the top flight after an absence of 25 years.
Heart of England Co-op chief executive, Steve Browne, said both staff and customers have gone “Coventry City dotty,” and his colleagues felt compelled to do something for the Sky Blue Army to mark the occasion.
“Hundreds of our staff support the Sky Blues and thousands of our customers and members do too. Coventry have stormed into the Premier League and we’ve certainly felt the buzz in the heart of the community.
“We thought, why not make a statement and share our excitement with the community and go sky blue for a while?”
Heart of England Co-op is Warwickshire’s biggest independent retailer, with eight convenience stores in and around Coventry all stocking the celebratory products.
“Our Cross Keys store in Bedworth will also be offering Coventry FC goodies as it’s very close to the club’s training ground. We were founded just yards from where our HQ is now based in Foleshill, so Coventry is a big part of our DNA,” added Browne. “What a brilliant moment for manager Frank Lampard and his amazing squad - and what a brilliant moment for the whole community. A massive congratulations to them all from everyone at the Heart of England Co-op.”
