
Södertälje in Sweden was home to Spar’s annual driver competition earlier this week, with representatives from wholesalers including the Henderson Group, AF Blakemore, James Hall & Co. Ltd and more testing their skills on the track.
With two previous successful events, the Spar International Driver Competition returned for the third year. In addition, the Transport Action Group meeting took place, providing “a valuable opportunity for enhanced discussions and collaboration among participants,” it said.
The competition was held at the Scania Demo Centre and Test Track in Södertälje, Sweden. A total of 14 drivers and 13 transport managers were in attendance, ialso ncluding those from Spar Ireland licensed operator BWG Foods.
Drivers were put through their paces across numerous different challenges, including driver safety knowledge, navigation, parking and braking, fuel efficiency and calm and safe driving. The coveted title Spar International Driver of the Year 2025 was tightly contested.
Carl Stirk from Spar UK wholesaler James Hall & Co. Ltd made it to the top three, coming third, with the driver of the year gong going to Kristijan Kristaj from Spar Austria
The Transport Action Group focused on the topic of AI and machine learning within transport. The meeting provided a valuable opportunity for enhanced discussions and collaboration among participants, ensuring that the latest advancements and technologies are shared amongst the wider Spar network.
