Ian Johnson, aged 54, of Abbey Hulton, was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 18 December, after pleading guilty to robbery and possession of a bladed article in a public place.
Johnson had entered the store on Abbots Road in Abbey Hulton at 9.45am on 11 January 2025, before brandishing a large knife and threatening staff. He demanded cash and cigarettes before making off.
Officers reviewed CCTV footage and arrested him nearby. Johnson initially replied ‘no comment’ in interview however later admitted his offending in court.
As well as the 30-month jail sentence, Johnson was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £228 upon his release.
Representing the criminal investigation department of Staffordshire Police, Detective Constable Colin Hitchins, said: “Johnson was brazen in his threats to staff at the store who bravely raised the alarm. I am pleased Johnson later admitted his offences in court and hope his prison sentence reassures the community that we will continue to do all we can to get dangerous individuals out of our communities.”
