A frequent shoplifter has been jailed after he stole numerous items worth over £230 from three different convenience stores in the Basingstoke area earlier this year.

John Wagstaff, 43, of Sunnymead, Oakley, admitted to stealing alcohol, meat and confectionery items from the three stores between 9 May and 3 July.

He took the items from Co-op on Oakley Lane, Oakley, a further Co-op on Wallingford Road in Basingstoke itself and the One Stop store on Guinea Court in Chineham.

Wagstaff was charged with nine counts of theft from a shop and pleaded guilty to all of the offences. He was sentenced to six weeks at Basingstoke Magistrates Court late last week (17 July).

PC Ross Holdsworth, from the Basingstoke Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We know John Wagstaff’s actions have caused a huge impact on our local businesses, shop workers and community.

“We take all reports of shoplifting extremely seriously and I hope this result reassures the community that we will do all we can to put offenders before the courts.”

If you’re a shop owner or staff member, please continue to report any shopliftings to us. With your information, we can take action, including arresting and charging suspects and convicting offenders at court.”
