A group of 18 One Stop colleagues have raised £6,900 for homeless charity Trinity Winchester after taking part in Trinity’s Big Charity Sleep Out last Friday (16 May).
Colleagues from stores in Winchester, Borden, Headley Down, Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport and Southampton slept outside Winchester Cathedral all night until sunrise.
Trinity Winchester provides specialist supported housing and a wide range of health services such as GP’s, counselling and dental care to those who are homeless.
In a move to create awareness of the real-life conditions homeless people face every day, colleagues and members of the public created and designed their own cardboard shelters to sleep in.
The group decided to support the charity due to it’s work not only supporting those experiencing homelessness but also domestic abuse, said One Stop.
“It was such an eye-opening experience to feel just a snippet of the awful conditions homeless people face every single day. The experience was worth it, and we hope the money raised can go a long way and make a huge impact,” commented Darren Gransden, area manager for Portsmouth at One Stop – who took part in the fundraiser.
Kirsty Boote, events and community fundraiser at Trinity Winchester, expressed the charity’s appreciation: “We are delighted with the sponsorship money raised by the One Stop team. This substantial amount will enable us to continue offering our vital services to those in need. We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all staff involved and their customers for their kind donations”.
The event saw 160 people sleep outside and raised a record-breaking £44,000 for the charity. according to the Hampshire Chronicle.
