Following on from the announcement last week by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper around the national retail crime strategic delivery plan, the National Business Crime Centre (NBCC) has now launched its own campaign, Tackling Retail Crime Together, which is set to reinforce its commitment to reducing retail crime across the UK.
The NBCC has played a pivotal role in shaping the strategic delivery plan as a key partner on the National Retail Crime Forum.
Tackling Retail Crime Together brings together police and partner agency initiatives under one cohesive national campaign and brand. Its goal is to highlight the significant work already underway to tackle retail crime and to send a clear message to prolific offenders that their actions will have consequences.
This initiative is backed by £2m in funding from the Home Office, and forms a core element of the delivery plan’s implementation strategy. The NBCC has engaged with all UK police forces to raise awareness of both the campaign and the strategic plan, encouraging unified support and action.
“The NBCC’s national position allows us to amplify and showcase the vital work being carried out by police and partners at a local level.”
NBCC lead, Superintendent Lisa Maslen, who attended the launch event in Derby, said: “We know from our work that police are making significant efforts to prosecute offenders involved in retail crime.
“However, there remains a public and industry perception that not enough is being done. The NBCC’s national position allows us to amplify and showcase the vital work being carried out by police and partners at a local level.
“By using the campaign and its branding, forces and partner organisations can highlight their efforts and success stories, demonstrating that tackling retail crime together is making a real difference.”
As part of the campaign, the NBCC is launching a new website - www.tacklingretailcrime.co.uk - which is in development but will serve as a central hub to document progress against the seven key deliverables outlined in the plan, and to showcase collaborative efforts to bring offenders to justice.
