Ed Woodall from the ACS welcomes the first four guests to the panel section of today’s conference.

At the Association of Convenience Stores’ (ACS) annual conference this morning, there were a host of informative panels for retailers and industry alike.

After an initial presentation from behavioural strategy expert, William Higham, he was joined onstage for a broader discussion on what the future of convenience retailer might look like, chaired by ACS chief executive, Ed Woodall. Alongside these speaker were Rebecca Dunlop, head of convenience for commercial propositions at Sainsbury’s, Michael Fletcher, managing director of Spar UK, and Steve Browne, chief executive at the Heart of England Co-op.

Topics covered spanned the increasing use of technology such as AI in stores - especially over the past 18 months, and how strengthening community ties could be the secret of the sector’s success in the coming decades.

Following this, Stewart Fenn, sales director at Booker, Andy Allen, retail operations director at BP and Nisa retailer Kaual Patel took to the stage alongside the ACS’s Chris Noice to discuss everything from the best treatment of staff to why getting on board with the DRS now, and not waiting until October next year, might be advisable for retailers.
