A local community in Surrey has rallied around a retailer who was the victim of a robbery.

Annie Williams of the Abinger Hammer Shop and Tea Rooms in Dorking, Surrey, had £3,000 taken in January when a raider sneaked into the back room of the store and stole her Christmas and New Year's takings before she had an opportunity to bank them.

When local residents heard of her plight, they organised a collection for Annie to help run the store. Customers described the store as "vital to the community" and "the hub of the area" and have so far collected more than £1,500 to help pay the store's bills.

Annie said she was grateful to everyone who had contributed money to help the store survive. "All these kind-hearted people who use the shop have got together to give me a huge amount back," she said. "These are just ordinary people who have given money. I still get a lump in my throat when I think about it."

Surrey Police are currently investigating the robbery and are appealing for any witnesses to the incident.
