More than £90,000 has been raised for the family of a Glasgow c-store owner who was fatally stabbed last Thursday evening in what is being treated as a religiously-motivated attack.

Asad Shah was discovered with serious injuries outside his shop, Shah’s Newsagents & Convenience Store in the Shawlands area of Glasgow, and was later pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Hours before he was attacked Asad had posted a goodwill Easter message on Facebook. Police have arrested a 32-year-old Muslim man in connection with the murder, and have confirmed that Asad was also a Muslim.

Local residents and customers of Asad set up a fundraising page on gofundme.com which has already raised more than £90,000 from more than 4,000 people.

Jennifer Bannerman, a neighbour of the Shah family, wrote: “Mr Shah was a popular, well respected and much loved member of our community and his death has devastated many. He was a warm and friendly man and he always went out of his way to make time to talk to you - he was more than just our local shopkeeper. He was a friend to many.

“It quickly became clear to us in the aftermath of this tragedy that the people of Shawlands (and wider) were looking for a way to show their support to Asad’s family and we thought this would be a fitting way to do so.

“We are raising funds for his family to use in whatever way they see most fitting - whether that be to contribute towards funeral expenses, provide financial security for his family in the coming months, or simply to do something in his memory. We know money will never make up for his loss but this is our way of showing our support for him, and showing his family how much he was cared for in our community.”

She said the page would be kept open until at least the end of the month due to popular demand.

Scottish Grocers’ Federation president Abdul Majid said: “As a retailer I know that this type of horrific crime impacts not only on the victim but on their family, customers and the community. Our thoughts are with Mr Shah’s family and I can say that if there is anything we can do to assist them through our benevolent fund we will do so with the utmost urgency.”

SGF chief executive Pete Cheema added: “Our recent crime report showed that almost 25% of retailers in Scotland experience violence and intimidation on a daily basis and we are working closely with senior officers from Police Scotland to address these issues.”
