A Barnsley convenience store has been prosecuted for food safety offences and ordered to pay £8,951.26 in fines and costs.

VVS Trading Ltd, which operates the Premier Kendray store on Birk Avenue in Kendray, were prosecuted in Barnsley Magistrates Court earlier this month (10 July).

The store was first visited by the area’s Trading Standards team in May last year, who found food being sold beyond its ‘use by’ date, as well as food being sold without the name and address of a business in the UK and without meeting all UK food labelling requirements.

Despite being served with official formal Improvement Notices from the team, when officers returned to check compliance in November 2024 they found food was still being sold beyond its dates - some by several days - as well as American candy with no contact details other than those for a USA business.

In total, VVS Trading Ltd pleaded guilty to 15 charges, consisting of two around the failure to comply with Improvement Notices and 13 around the sale of unsafe food items.

They were ordered to pay a fine of £6,000, a victim surcharge of £2,000 and costs of £951.26 - totalling £8,951.26.

Councillor Wendy Cain, cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities, said of the outcome: “We’re committed to keeping our communities safe, and our teams do great work to not just advise businesses on how they can comply with safety standards, but also to take action where necessary.

“This case sends a clear message that we take food safety seriously, and we’ll continue to work with local businesses to make sure they’re operating responsibly and within the law.”
