Twice already in this column I’ve mentioned 0845 national call rate numbers being used by big outfits. My latest complainant is Rakesh Sood, who runs Handersons at Waltham Abbey in Hertfordshire.

His news wholesaler WH Smith will let customers ring in their returns etc on a local number if they call before 9am. After that, it’s an 0845 number, even though the depot is local to its customers. Rakesh has found a solution. Check out the website www.18866.com for free, or almost free, calls – including India, says Rakesh. He signed on a few months ago and his bill so far has reached only around the £5/£7 mark.
