High-profile retailer Lesley Brown, who runs Frankmarsh Stores in Barnstaple, Devon, checked her invoices from Dawsons News and saw that 30p a week was being appropriated to support the newstrade's charity NewstrAid. She rang to find out why they were helping themselves and was told that she had been informed via a glossy brochure that it would be happening. If she had wanted to opt out, she apparently should have said so.
"It sounds petty, but it's the principle," she said, "and I know a lot of people don't check their invoices and won't be aware of the donation they're making." Now you do.
