Asda has been fined £42,500 for stocking scores of out-of-date products at three Cardiff stores.
Trading standards officers found 143 out-of-date products in the Cardiff Bay shop, 176 in Coryton and 200 in Pentwyn, including sandwiches, sausage rolls and a butter-basted chicken.
Asda said it had taken the necessary steps to prevent the food being on sale but added that staff had been retrained to make sure it did not happen again.
It denied 54 public health and hygiene offences but was given the fine and forced to pay an additional £9,660 in costs at Cardiff Magistrates Court.
