A comparatively new Morrisons Daily in Stoke-on-Trent has asked for permission to open 24-hours, as well as pitching to sell alcohol all day – generating objections from locals.
The potential change has been described by one objector as “distressing”.
The Ford Green Road store, in Norton - which only opened in November 2025 - recently submitted its application to the city council as Jacks Convenience Store.
As a result of the objection, the council will now hold a hearing on its decision, set for later today (Monday 26 January).
In a letter on the council’s website, local resident Rebecca Prince explained: “I’ve lived opposite for the past two years and until recently, it operated between approximately 7am and 9pm. During this time, we’ve had no objection to the station and found it extremely convenient. We fully accepted the normal level of activity that comes with living opposite a petrol station during those hours as we purchased this house with it already there.
“However, the change to a 24-hour operation is extremely concerning for us and other nearby residents. A 24-hour operation removes any guaranteed period of peace and quiet for residents. It’s a residential area and the prospect of noise, disturbance, engine revving and increased traffic throughout the night is distressing.
“This will inevitably affect sleep, wellbeing and quality of life for those living nearby, including families.”
A response on behalf of the applicant said a number of measures could easily be put in place to counter the residents’ fears, including new signage and staff monitoring the forecourt at night.
Prince responded: “I appreciate that the applicant has considered residents’ concerns and has attempted to address them. However, I do not feel they adequately mitigate the concerns and for this reason I’m not comfortable withdrawing my objection.”
