Another popular fixture for shoppers during the barbecue season is the bread display. Allied Bakeries’ category director Guy Shepherd says the sector saw a 40% increase in the sales of bread rolls between May and August last year compared with January to April. He adds that rolls are purchased for 43% of barbecues (Nielsen Scantrack).

Shepherd advises retailers to be mindful of the clock, as 78% of barbecues take place between 4pm and 9pm (Kantar Worldpanel August 2010) so store owners must make sure they have enough bakery stock to cover the early evening rush.

Warburtons is capitalising on the popularity of the barbecue season with the launch of two new products. Hot Dog Rolls and Seeded Burger Buns are available in packs of six and feature an American theme to their packaging. Warburtons marketing director Richard Hayes says: “The summer season always sees a peak in outdoor eating occasions such as barbecues and picnics and with the Royal Wedding, the recent succession of Bank Holidays and a hot summer forecast, this is the ideal time to bring something new to the rolls market.”
