A prolific shoplifter has been handed a 10-week jail sentence for targeting a convenience store in Willenhall. Matthew Smith, 47, of no fixed abode, appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court last week, where he pleaded guilty to four shop thefts at a convenience store, on Lichfield Road.

The shop thefts took place between 10 March and 27 April this year.

Response and neighbourhood officers arrested Smith on Darwall Street, Walsall, last Monday (28 April) where he was charged with the offences shortly after and remanded to appear before the courts.

Sergeant Paul Smith, Willenhall neighbourhood policing manager, said: “Smith is a prolific offender who was targeting local shops and stores. He has a long history of theft related offences, and clearly has no regard for court orders and continues to offend. Such offending has a significant impact on our businesses and targeting shop thieves is a priority us.

“This sentence sends out a clear message to shop thieves that if you commit shop theft crimes, we will arrest you and place you before the courts and you will spend time behind bars.”
