Thames Valley Police has, for the first time, used its forced closure powers to shut down a convenience store in Oxford.

Turna’s Local, also known as Park Stores, on Florence Park Road in the south east of the city, was served a three-month closure order on 20 June, and in addition its alcohol sale licence has since been revoked.

However, it has now come to light that the reason behind the closure came from the store being under investigation for handling and selling stolen goods to customers.

The order was granted by Oxford Magistrates’ Court after the shop was linked to an ongoing investigation, police have revealed.

Thames Valley Police, who did not initially give a reason for the closure of the store in June, have subsequently announced that this is the first time the force has used the power to force a store to shut in the Thames Valley area.

As a result of the closure, no one can enter the shop, except for those specified on the order, including the property freeholder, officers from Trading Standards or the emergency services.
