A man who tried to kill an 84-year-old shop worker has been jailed for 13 years.
Richard Wilson, 28, pleaded guilty to attempted murder at a hearing in Inverness last month. He was sentenced at The High Court in Glasgow on 1 September 2025.
According to the BBC, Wilson punched the victim 18 times before stamping on his head and kneeing him in the face.
The attack left the elderly shop worker with a bleed on the brain after the incident at his nephew’s store in Inverness on 12 March last year.
Wilson had entered the store demanding £50, reported the BBC. When the shop worker said he was going to call the police, Wilson went behind the counter, grabbed the man by the neck, shoved him to the floor and began punching him.
It was all caught on CCTV.
Detective Inspector Caroline Mackay said: “This was an extremely vicious and despicable display of violence against an elderly shop worker. The man suffered serious injuries and the long-term recovery time, as well as the emotional trauma caused by this attack, cannot be underestimated.
“We would like to thank the local community for their support during our investigation, in particular a woman who came to the aid of the elderly shop worker.
“I hope this sentence sends a clear message that violence is completely unacceptable. Police Scotland are committed to bringing perpetrators to justice and we will continue to work closely with our partners to do so.”
