Business finance experts are urging support for retailers during Independent Retailer Month, as the celebration - which focuses on US stores - serves as a reminder of the importance to local communities and the economy more broadly.
From increased wages and tax bills to weak consumer spending, UK retailers have faced tough challenges of late, but Independent Retailer Month - which is currently in full swing - marks an important event that celebrates small retail businesses and encourages people to shop locally.

Speaking on the need for support for event, Joe Phelan (left), loans expert from the money.co.uk site, said: “Independent Retailer Month is a great opportunity to celebrate the vital role small shops play in our communities, and to help them tackle some of the biggest challenges they’re facing.
“From soaring wage and tax bills to rising retail crime, many independent retailers are feeling the pressure. Making the most of government support, such as the increased Employment Allowance or apprenticeship funding, can help ease some of that burden.
“Meanwhile, with consumer spending still weak, small retailers should use this month to shout about what makes them unique. Whether that’s through in-store events, exclusive discounts or getting involved in local campaigns, now’s the time to engage your community and encourage them to shop local.
“Independent retailers contribute over £100bn to the UK economy each year, but to keep thriving, they need real, sustained support.”
