The British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA) has this week announced its support for the nationwide kindness initiative, Shopkind, which has been created to support and protect retail workers.
The scheme has been launched with support from the Home Office, and attempts to unite the entirety of the retail sector to combat the rise in violence and abuse against retail staff.
It is also being supported by a number of major high street retailers as well as the nation’s independent shopkeepers, along with the shopworkers’ union, Usdaw.
Running throughout July 2025, the campaign encourages shoppers to be considerate while recognising the essential work carried out by those in stores.
ShopKind also raises awareness of the impact that abusive behaviour can have on shopworkers, and calls for greater appreciation of their contribution to the communities they work in.
Retailers and any interested parties can access free downloadable assets to support the campaign and promote positive customer behaviour in their stores.
There are also ShopKind Brand guidelines to help retailers understand how to use the campaign materials. There is space available on materials for stores to add their own logos to demonstrate their support for the campaign.
The posters, videos and other assets are available here.
