Retailers have rubbished a report which claims family businesses are asking for trouble if they hand over the reins to a second generation.

The Centre for Economic Performance says the benefits of family management are often lost if control is passed on to the next generation.

But Mark Gillett, sales director at Gillett’s Spar stores in Devon and Cornwall, believes the family approach works well. He says: “I will eventually take on the MD role from my father John, who’s about 60% retired, but it’s important the mantle is handed over gradually.”
