The take-home grocery wine market in the UK is worth £9.1bn annually. Wine market value sales are just up on last year (LY) in the latest 12 months (L12M), at +0.2%, but growth is exclusively driven by a volume price increase at +2.0% versus (vs) last year, with volume sales (litres) down by -1.8% year-on-year (YOY).

The market is dominated by red and white wine, both of which have seen value sales decline YOY, but rosé wine has bucked the trend, with good growth of 7.4% over the L12M vs LY, driven by both volume (+4.5% vs LY) and average volume price (+2.8%) vs LY. sparkling Wine is now the third biggest category and is growing value by 1.7% YOY. Fortified wine is just in growth up 0.2% vs LY, but growth is exclusively driven by average volume price.

The wine market is dominated by the major multiple grocer supermarket channel, but symbols and independents do over-trade in wine versus food with 9.8% of the market value. The symbols and independent channel is losing share down -0.4PP vs LY over the L12M, but share picked up over the hot summer, with share growth in the L4W to beginning of September vs LY. The channel is under-performing across all the wine categories, bar rosé wine, where sales are up 12.4% YOY with volume sales up by 9.2% YOY. The symbols and independent channel is strongly out-performing in rosé wine, making rosé wine the stand-out opportunity for symbol and independent retailers in wine.
