As well as the predicted sales boost, Co-op is also extending its delivery hours this weekend.

With England’s Quarter Final clash against Norway coinciding with hot weather this Saturday, Co-op stores are preparing for their biggest day for beer, lager and cider sales – with purchases expected to be almost 50% higher than the previous weekend, and 20% ahead of the current busiest day this year, when England took on Panama on 27 June.

Barbecue food sales are also expected to soar this weekend, with Co-op’s British sausages sales set to increase by 35% week-on-week, the group said.

Elsewhere, Co-op’s online delivery opening hours have also been extended. It is again extending its online home delivery times in around 130 stores to up to 1am through its own online shop and partners Just Eat, Uber Eats and Deliveroo, enabling supporters to top-up on snacks, food and drink without missing a moment of the action.

Kate McCrae, Co-op’s operations director, said: “As a convenience retailer, the summer is our busiest time and with England’s big game on Saturday along with soaring temperatures, we’ve stocked our shelves and are ready for what we expect to be our biggest day for beer, lager and cider sales.”
