A team of leading lights from the convenience industry have raised more than £120,000 for charity as part of a gruelling ten day cycle ride.

The team of 23 senior retailers and suppliers smashed their original target of £100,000 with the 420km cycle across Vietnam and Cambodia, with the current total standing at more than £120,000 following a silent auction at last night’s HIM CTP Awards dinner.

Money raised by the team, which included HIM International’s Neil Turton and Tom Fender, Spar md Debbie Robinson and a number of independent retailers, will support the work of the Mines Advisory Group (MAG). The UK based charity works across the world clearing war zones.

Brands such as Burton’s Biscuits, Nisa and Booker also sponsored the event, for which donations are still being accepted.

HIM International’s Neil Turton said: “I am so proud that our team have exceeded the original £100,000 target so comfortably. It means MAG can destroy even more landmines, and save and improve more innocent lives.”

Ingrid Turner, MAG’s partnerships officer, said: “I’m so grateful for this incredible support from the convenience and grocery industry - all the cyclists who used their pedal power to fundraise, all the suppliers and colleagues who sponsored and encouraged them, and of course our generous event sponsors, Burton’s, Cott, Nisa and Booker.”
