Nicholas Johnson writes from Sedlescombe Stores in East Sussex: “I read the article Some Light Relief? (last issue) with interest. We have been through the same problem when we received the claim for business rates. Initially, I tried to appeal the claim on the basis that the Chancellor had said that there would be 100% relief but was informed that, because we used rural relief at 50%, we would not be eligible. We thought this was ridiculous and we took it to our councillor who confirmed that it was true, however he said that we could make a claim under hardship relief, which we did, and received 100% relief as a result.

“I will pass a copy of the article to our MP and see if he can get this legal anomaly changed.”

Three cheers!
