Peter Brooker, head of corporate affairs at PayPoint, emailed to tell me that he was disappointed that I hadn't pointed out PP's good deals with banks in the last issue.

"We offer our agents a specially negotiated deal with Barclays, which offers a considerable saving on standard bank charges. For example, with the discount for PayPoint retailers, it costs 15p per £100 cash deposited (against 48p on standard tariffs) a saving of 69%. In addition, there is no monthly fee a 100% saving on the standard monthly fee of £3. This discounted PayPoint tariff is available to PayPoint retailers with an annual sales turnover of up to £1m per annum."

Karim Mawji, who runs Young's Newsagents at Pinner in Middlesex, is a PayPoint retailer and also reminded me of PP's package. However, he found himself a good deal via a 'business investor' account with Nationwide. No charge for up to £5,000 cash banked daily and up to 10 cheques. "The only down side," he says, "is that they don't take loose change. You are only allowed six debits a month and no direct debits."
