Wholesaler Blueheath has ended its relationship with third-party transport operators and completed the purchase of its own fleet of delivery vehicles.
The company had previously taken advantage of spare capacity in other companies' delivery fleets.
Chief executive Mark Aylwin said the investment would bring significant cost savings, and that the 3,000 independent and multiple retailers which Blueheath supplies would benefit. "It is my belief that to deliver the very best in customer service, you have to own the relationship between the drivers and your customers," he said.
Blueheath will continue to operate its just-in-time stock ordering system. Aylwin said: "Our aim is to combine the best of Blueheath technology with a traditional delivery model."
