A.F. Blakemore has launched a new Spar store at Swansea University, delivering a fully modernised, student focused convenience offer and demonstrating the strength of Spar’s BTP+ programme for university retailing.
The store replaces the longstanding Costcutter following a competitive tender process led by Swansea University Students’ Union.
Spar was selected for its internationally recognised brand, strong value proposition, broader product ranges and its ability to tailor a complete convenience solution to the needs of a university campus. The decision followed extensive consultation with elected student officers, senior SU leadership and student community representatives.
The project represents a full refit, transforming the store with expanded refrigeration, digital screens, improved layout and a significantly broader range. The refit was delivered through a holistic partnership between A.F. Blakemore, the Students’ Union and Swansea University, with all parties working together to create a modern, value led store that reflects how students live, study and shop. The refit also includes the installation of electronic shelf edge labels (ESELS), introduced as part of a wider Blakemore initiative to modernise store operations and improve pricing accuracy.
The new Spar brings a comprehensive product mix designed specifically for university life, including a revamped Spar Meal Deal, Philpotts sandwiches, Country Choice food to go, Iceland frozen grab and go and an expanded chilled range. Multiple value price points and everyday essentials support students, NHS staff and local residents who regularly pass through Singleton Park and the nearby seafront.
Store manager Emma Snaydon, who continues to lead the existing team, said the change has brought a noticeable uplift for customers, adding that the new ranges and layout make the store easier to shop and better suited to busy student routines.

Bleddyn Carter for Swansea University Students’ Union added that SPAR gives the campus a more modern and varied store that reflects what the community needs, from students grabbing lunch between lectures to NHS staff on shift breaks.
