Spar is recalling incorrectly labelled Egg Mayonnaise Sandwich Filler that could pose a food poisoning risk because of an incorrect use-by date.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said the 220g product was labelled with a January 17 use-by date, incorrectly giving the product an extra 15 days than the January 2 cut-off that should have been printed on-pack.

The FSA said consuming the filler after its intended use-by date could pose a food poisoning risk.

No other Spar products were known to be affected, it said.

The agency advised customers they could return the product to the store for a full refund.

Spar has displayed point-of-sale notices in all stores selling the product, explaining the reason for the recall and instructing them what to do.

Spar said: “We apologise for any inconvenience to our customers.”

A spokeswoman did not have any further information when C-store called.

It is not known how the error arose.

The issue follows Spar’s recall of a batch of 180g own-brand Midget Gems last September with a best-before date of March 31 because of the risk of contamination with small pieces of wood.
