Mars Chocolate Drinks and Treats has today announced an extension to its hot chocolate range with the launch of Galaxy Hot Chocolate and Maltesers Hot Chocolate Pods.

With sales of hot beverage pods growing at 9% YoY, topping 178m pod sales last year (IRI 52 w/e 9 September 2017) and 28% of households owning a coffee machine (Mintel Coffee - UK - August 2017 - Ownership of Coffee Pod Machines) this latest launch is set to capitalise on the popularity of hot chocolate pods within the market.

As a whole, the hot chocolate and malted drinks food beverages market has an annual sales value of £128 million. Hot chocolate represents 67% of the overall category and is the leading segment with an annual sales value of £86 million, while the malted drinks market is worth £28 million. Instant hot chocolate (including low calorie) accounts for 52% of the hot chocolate segment and standard instant hot chocolate alone continues to generate annual sales of £24 million (IRI Infoscan, TOTAL MARKET, 52 w/e data to 02.12.2017).
