Organic supplier Biona has announced the launch of a trio of new spelt breakfast cereals. All three tap into the “current trend for minimally processed, organic breakfast options,” it said, and are available to retailers from this month.
The new Crispy Spelt Flakes are made from 100% whole organic spelt and nothing else, with an RRP of £3.29. Next come the organic Spelt Puffs, made entirely from 100% organic puffed spelt and with an RRP of £2.69. Finally, the organic Honey Spelt Puffs see the addition of honey for a gently sweet, fibre-rich start to the day and with an RRP of £3.49.
With two-thirds of British consumers now acknowledging that a healthy breakfast is vital for a good start to the day and Biona reporting health-motivated breakfast choices being up 3.3% year-on-year, retailers need to consider whether they are stocking the right products to meet this demand, it said.
Spelt is an ancient grain and has experienced a major resurgence in popularity as a nutritious, nutty-flavoured alternative to modern wheat. It offers benefits such as improved heart health, digestion and blood sugar control due to its high fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals content.
Carmen Ferguson, brand manager at Biona’s parent company, Windmill Organics, said: “As many consumers are re-evaluating their breakfast choices and ignoring some of the more highly processed and overly sweet traditional breakfast items in favour of products which are more natural, organic and healthy, we’re delighted to introduce this new range.”
