Spar retailer Botterills Convenience Stores lifted the prestigious Neighbourhood Store of the Year title for 2005 at the Robert Wiseman Dairies Awards, held before Christmas.

The Lanarkshire-based group’s Springboig store in Glasgow, managed by Carol O’Donnell, was crowned the cream of the crop. It fended off intense competition from all over the UK. National judge Graeme Hay described the outlet as “outstanding”. He said: “They excel in every aspect of convenience retailing and set the standards for which others should aspire.”

The store also received the Excellence in Milk Marketing Award. A Career Recognition Award was presented to Nanette Botterill, wife of the group’s chairman Jim Botterill, topping off a successful night for the company.

Awards were presented to stores all over the country.

David Sands Ltd, based in Kinross, won the Wise Food Healthy Living Initiative Award, while Village Store of the Year was presented to Bawdeswell Store (Londis), Dereham, Norfolk.

Hull-based South Cave Service Station won the Excellence in Forecourt Retailing Awards, while Nearby Spar Stores, Bath, was rewarded for its Excellence in Food to Go.

Nearby Spar Stores in Bournemouth won City Centre Store of the Year and Franco Margiotta’s store in Dundas Street, Edinburgh, was named New Store of the Year.
