Bestway Wholesale has introduced several new lines to help retailers keep up with the evolving trends in the wine market.

The company says it has seen triple digit growth in Prosecco sales and sales of Spanish wines have increased across the board with Rioja performing exceptionally well.

Bestway is urging retailers to grasp this opportunity and has launched Royal Prosecco, a range of Spanish wines, under the Toro Riendo label, and a full bodied Rioja, Villa Principal. These are being complemented by an exclusive UK agreement to sell the Cellier D’Or range of French wines.

The group’s licensed category controller Roopinder Toor said: “The growth of Prosecco has been phenomenal over the past year and is now becoming the nation’s fizz of choice. Much of this is down to the quality of the product and the price differential between Prosecco and Champagne. Prosecco delivers for consumers both in terms of taste and affordability.

“We have been working with suppliers to bring a quality brand to market for the past year. Royal Prosecco is the culmination of that process. Our Royal Cava and Lelac Champagne are multi-award winning wines and we wanted to ensure that our Prosecco would stand side by side with these in quality. We are extremely pleased with both the liquid and packaging which promotes the brand’s authenticity. Royal Prosecco is produced in Treviso, which has continually proven itself to be the home of the finest examples of Prosecco, and offers bright and fresh fruit flavours that makes it the perfect wine to have on its own or an ideal accompaniment to a variety of dishes.”

Also new to the group’s licensed stable is Villa Principal Rioja Tempranillo. Produced for Bestway by winemakers with more than 100 years’ experience, this is a rich, fruity wine from the tempranillo grape.

Toor said: “Like Prosecco, Rioja has had a fabulous year. In the UK sales are up 10% but sales through Bestway are outperforming this. The shift by consumers to better quality wines is fantastic news for retailers as it means greater cash margin. With an RRP of £6.49, Villa Principal Rioja offers a fantastic deal for shoppers but also provides a 20% margin for retailers.”

The growth of Rioja has also encouraged shoppers to delve further into Spanish wines and as a result Spanish wines are increasing in popularity. To build on this trend the group has also launched a range of everyday Spanish wines under the Toro Riendo label. (Laughing Bull)

Toro Riendo comprises five variants; dry, medium and sweet whites, a medium bodied red and a medium dry rosé.

Bill Creighton, wine category manager who has overseen the launch, added: “With the increased consumer appetite for Spanish wines, now is the idea time to launch an own label variant. The Toro Riendo name represents the playful image of the brand and the modern graphics will ensure shelf standout with other Spanish wines which can sometimes look a bit dated. Independents’ shelves are full of new world wines but Europe still has a key role to play and Toro Riendo is the perfect opportunity for retailers to increase sales and capitalise on the category.”

Finally, completing the new line up is an exclusive label from France, Cellier D’Or, which comprises red, white and rosé variants.

Royal Prosecco and Villa Principal Rioja Tempranillo will be promoted in Bestway and Batleys depots throughout February with a discounted case price of £29.99 and £24.99 respectively.
