The 5,815sq ft outlet is due to open on December 11 opposite the city’s John Lewis department store.
It will feature a self-service food counter as well as meat, fish and cheese counters.
The company plans to open another three stores by the spring of 2009 which will range in size from 5,000-7,000sq ft.
The stores are significantly bigger than Tesco and Sainsbury’s convenience formats.
Meanwhile Wal-Mart, owner of Asda, is opening smaller Marketside stores in Phoenix, Arizona to counter Tesco’s Fresh & Easy roll-out in the area.
