Labour MP Keith Vaz is tabling an early day motion (EDM) in the House of Commons on the power of supermarkets.

The Leicester East MP says the supermarket code of practice has proved ineffective. He is calling on the Office of Fair Trading to collect more evidence of breaches and for the government to appoint a regulator to prevent a single business from becoming too dominant.

Vaz’s move follows the recent ACS Campaign Champion’s initiative which involved more than 150 c-store retailers lobbying their local MPs to represent their views on the All Party Parliamentary Group for Small Shops inquiry into High Street UK 2015. ACS public affairs manager James Lowman said the EDM showed there was genuine concern among MPs. He said: “This adds more weight to the campaign and helps build the pressure.” He added that although EDMs rarely led to legislation, it should act as a focal point for campaigns. “We would say to retailers, write to your MP and urge them to sign it.”
