Labour MP Keith Vaz is pressing for a change in the law to help shopkeepers claim compensation for persistent roadworks.

Vaz, MP for Leicester East, is taking up the cause following the 18-week closure of Humberstone Road in the city while a 125-year-old bridge is repaired. The closure has hit convenience stores and newsagents hard.

Vaz said: “The closure is damaging businesses and is detrimental to residents.”

Farooq Ahmed, owner of Uppingham News, said: “It is affecting us badly. People are just not coming in. There is nowhere to park and I’ve lost all my passing trade.”
