The Scottish Grocers Federation (SGF) has welcomed the announcement of a test purchasing pilot scheme in the Fife region, to help prevent the sale of alcohol to under-18s. SGF chief executive John Drummond believes the scheme will help retailers to ensure best practice procedures are adopted.
He said: "Many of our members already test themselves and their staff and some have adopted the Challenge 21 scheme, where any customer who looks younger than 21 is asked for ID. The police are aware of the difficulties and we are working together to address the problem."
The Scottish Executive recently gave the go-ahead for test purchasing in Scotland, which has long been common practice in England and Wales.
