Tates has opened its first university campus store at Birmingham University and agreed a deal that will see it operating out of Worcester Hospital by the end of this month.
The 700sq ft hospital store, which Tates purchased from United News, will specialise in confectionery and soft drinks. The larger university store, previously managed by the National Union of Students, will stock a complete range but no hot food to go due to university restrictions.
"The development of these stores has been part of our strategy for some time," said managing director Geoff Hallam. "We're looking to add about 12-15 stores a year and these two stores are the next step in that process. The hospital store is small but will be a good learning curve.
"We already have stores close to universities, but the Birmingham store is our first campus outlet. We expect sandwiches to make up about 20% of the business and alcohol should perform well."
