Scottish Wholesale Association (SWA) president Graham Benson is urging wholesalers to work even harder with their retail customers to keep them profitable.
Benson, managing director of Bellevue Cash & Carry in Edinburgh, told the SWA's annual conference at Dunblane earlier this month that wholesalers and cash and carries often under-estimate how much help independent retailers need.
Benson said: "While we have some excellent retailers trading under a Spar or Hot House fascia or one of the others supported by our members, there is a tier just below that level that is not benefiting from any investment at all.
"Those retailers represent a huge opportunity for us all - and we can help turn their businesses around. It is imperative that SWA members do all they can to encourage increased membership of retail groups and other schemes. It is up to us to do all we can to inspire them to aspire to that higher level."
