Spar has reported a 6.4% increase in sales for the financial year to the end of April 2005. The first six months of this year are showing 2.4% growth on a like for like basis, and recruitment is also boosting the symbol in some key markets.

Forecourt numbers have grown by 10% annually, with more than 400 now trading under Spar. The group has also boosted convenience store numbers in Scotland by 7% in the past six months. Spar UK managing director Jerry Marwood said: “We are constantly updating and improving our own label range to meet consumers’ needs, as well as delivering against their expectations with excellent pricing, availability and convenience. “Ultimately, the success of Spar is all about setting the standard for the best possible quality within the independent symbol sector.”
