The company aims to have a single brand, product range, price structure and IT system in place across its c-store estate by March 2008. In addition, it is rationalising its organisation into 27 areas, falling into three regions - North, Central and West, and South - each managed by a regional managing director.
Many departments will be realigned to support the new structures, although there will be minimal changes to the property and store development team, with Bells and Jacksons staff transferring to Sainsbury's.
Sainsbury's managing director of convenience Lawrence Christensen said: "The implementation of these proposals will create a united team and the overall cost savings to Sainsbury's will make a significant contribution to our overall recovery plans."
The first store under the William Jackson name opened in Hull in 1851. Sainsbury's currently operates 301 convenience stores, including 59 Bells and 119 Jacksons outlets.
