Redorange retailer Nigel Dowdney was named as the ACS Community Hero for 2008 at the Association's Summit in Birmingham last week.
Nigel and his wife Shaz, who run two stores in Norfolk, collected the award and a cheque for £1,000 - courtesy of sponsors P&G - after a web vote against the two other finalists, Budgens retailer Jonathan James of Soham, Cambridgeshire, and Nita Shah of Hermitage Post Office & Stores, Berkshire.
As well as attracting votes from people in the industry, many of Nigel and Shaz's customers got behind the campaign, sending in votes by fax if they did not have internet access.
Nigel has been shortlisted for the award for the previous two years, but won this time round largely thanks to his efforts to attract funding for projects to improve rundown local areas, and his involvement with groups offering advice to businesses in the community.
