Scottish Spar distributor CJ Lang is to invest £5m in a new distribution depot in Dundee.
The family-run business, which employs more than 2,000 people and services 400 Spar stores across Scotland, is extending its Longtown Road ambient distribution centre to incorporate its chilled and frozen operation from Clepington Road.
The expansion will be carried out in two main stages - a 30,000sq ft extension to the existing ambient warehouse, followed by the construction of a 28,000sq ft temperature-controlled area for fresh foods due for completion in January 2009.
David Walker, chief executive of CJ Lang & Son, said: "Our decision to invest in a new depot comes at a time of very strong growth in the fresh and chilled market. We must remain efficient and use the latest technology to push our business forward while taking fresh foods to a new level. All areas of the business will benefit greatly."
He added that the extra space would also allow the company to take advantage of more deals which will ultimately benefit the local Spar shopper.
